Canberra Glassworks

General information

Canberra Glassworks is an amazing gallery and glass art studio open to the all-purpose public to view the glass artists working and it is the largest dedicated glass studio facility in Australia. Canberra glassworks is a place where you will find lots of glass items that will capture your attention with its beauty. It is the only cultural centre that is wholly dedicated to contemporary glass art and glass exhibitions. At its core Canberra Glassworks is a working Glassworks that provides access to glassmaking facilities for glass artists. It is a unique place and a not-for-profit organization that makes glass decorations, and they allow people to come in to their work environment and make paperweights for a nominal fee. It is located in the Kingston Powerhouse and has a lot of items to show to every visitor. You can also see professional glass artists doing some items in the moment you are visiting.

The Canberra Glassworks history

Canberra Glassworks was placed in Kingston Powerhouse, which was not built to host the glassworks. The building was designed by John Smith Murdoch and constructed from 1913-1915. The building was a power station generated electricity until 1957 and is Canberra's oldest public building. At the initiative of the Ministry of Arts the building was decided to host Canberra Glassworks and announced the name of the centre in late 2005. The centre was originally scheduled to be opened in September 2006, but was opened in May 2007. The creation of Glassworks and renovation of this building is part of the redevelopment of the lake foreshore surrounding Kingston.

Highlight of Canberra Glassworks

Visiting the Canberra Glassworks it is a very unique and interesting experience that everyone should try. Australia has developed an enviable reputation nationally and internationally for the quality and skill of its glass artists that work here. Canberra Glassworks provides both, artists and visitors with great possibilities and opportunities. The artists have the opportunity to grow and further develop their glass practice, and to further contribute to this very special local industry, and the visitors have the opportunity to interact with and learn about glass making and the heritage of Canberra's Kingston Powerhouse. Visitors can meet artists, see glassmaking as it happens, view exhibitions, take tours and have a hands-on experience working with glass. It's a great chance to learn how glass is made, right from when it comes in its deadly powder form up until when you put it in a kiln to cool down.

Highlight of a visit to the Glassworks are also demonstrations of glassblowing in the "Hotshop". Visitors sit above, looking down on the workshop floor. Glass workers extract molten glass from the furnace and shape it while giving a running commentary. Also if you like to see more incredible items made in a unique way than there is a gallery of glass works, which is above the main hotshop areas. There is also a gift shop, where you can buy exquisite handmade pieces like: production glass from some of Australia's leading glass artists, books about glass, glass and glass-inspired objects for children, Canberra Glassworks' own production range, glassmaking materials and equipment. Glassworks also offers courses to non-practicing artists and members of the public, as well as students. There is also a volunteer program.
So, if you're looking for something unique, something a bit different that most tourists would probably miss altogether, you should definitely check out Canberra Glassworks.
