Waipio Valley Road

Waipio Valley is a marvelous valley located in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawai’i. In the Hawaiian language  "Waipiʻo" means curved water. Waipio represents  a steep road that goes down into the valley from a great point located on the top of the southern wall of the valley. The Waipio Valley Road on the island of Hawai'i is the steepest road of its length in the world, reaching 250 meters from the Waipio Valley to the plateau situated  just 1 kilometer above.  The average grade is 25% and the peak grade reaches 40%. In some places this valley is steeper than the Baldwin Street, in Dunedin, New Zealand and Canton Avenue in Pittsburgh, which are considered as the world's steepest streets. The Waipio Valley Road  looks like a real road, not a street, and offers such a great experience for cyclists. Sometimes it is not recognized as a road because it is open only to 4-wheel drive vehicles, but it is a good paved road well maintained by the government.

Carefully lined along the Hamakua Coast on the northeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i, The valley is the largest and the most southern one, of the seven valleys on the windward side of the Kohala Mountains. Waipi'o is very wide at the coast and it is almost six miles deep.  At the coast there is  a splendid black sand beach permanently refreshed by the Pacific Ocean waves. The other side of the valley is highlighted by the spectacular beauty of the cliffs, which reaches almost 2000 feet in elevation with numerous cascading waterfalls. Hiking in the Waipio Valley is truly sensational.
Even if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, your drive will end at the Waipio Valley Lookout for sure.  On this site the view of the valley and of the beach is truly fantastic. No matter if you have a better experience, you have to hike down the trail that runs to the edge of the valley and discover the exceptional wonders of Waipio. This valley is wide open and spectacular jungle trees, rivers, and Hawaiian animals are spreaded in all directions.

The road from the Waipio lookout is very steep, and the road descends 1000 feet in a mere mile to the bottom of the valley. This will be an unforgettable experience for you  and you will spend there lovely moments, in a very exciting ambiance.
