Perhaps the most important work in the world, La Scala in Piazza della Scala, has a newly renovated auditorium of red velvet. Designed by Piermarini, the theater was built between 1776 and 1778 under the patronage of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria in the period when much of northern Italy was under the dominion of the Habsburg dynasty.
