Great Synagogue in Budapest is the most beautiful synagogue in the world and second largest, certainly one not to be missed sightseeing holiday in Budapest.
Jews were banished from the city in the eighteenth century such as Hebrew, founded a neighborhood just outside the old city. Jews have built their main synagogue in a residential area. This great Temple was built between 1844 and 1859 after plans and advice Ludwig Forster.
Great Synagogue in Budapest is the second largest in the world - the largest is in New York - and can get about three thousand people. Byzantine style reminiscent of monuments and fascinating sights of the Far East. Two domes are placed on top of two twin towers 43 meters high. The two towers symbolize the columns of Solomon's Temple.
Spacious interior is richly decorated. A single column supporting the dome 12 meters high. The ground floor seats are for men and the floor, and balconies are places for women. Surprisingly, the synagogue also has an organ, although this instrument is used only in Christian churches. Great acoustics of the synagogue, Budapest make this a perfect monument to all kinds of concerts.
During the Second World War, the Great Synagogue in Budapest has gone through dramatic events. The Nazis established a ghetto in Hebrew in 1944 which used only as a starting point for boarding to deportation. Some people have found refuge in the synagogue but thousands of people died in the winter of 1944. Their bodies are buried in the yard.
Behind the main building is located Heroes Temple which was built between 1929 and 1931 to commemorate Jews who died in WWI. Restoring Great Synagogues of Budapest was not completed so long ago, and some of the costs were covered by a foundation of Tony Curtis which has Hungarian roots.
Hebrew Museum adjacent to the synagogue has a memorial room dedicated to the many exhibits about the Holocaust and Jewish culture. The museum has the same schedule as the synagogue.
