The Bent Pyramid

The Bent Pyramid rises up as a fascinating structure which stirs several questions about the evolution of the pyramid. This pyramid starts at an angle of about 52 degrees and then suddenly changes to a more gradual angle of 43 degrees. This interesting arrangement shows the pyramid in a mysterious and unique appearance. The most widely accepted theory of the pyramid is that the King Sneferu realized that if he had continued to build the pyramid at its initial angle, it would have risen to a height where a huge amount of material and labor would have been necessary. Another theory relates that the initial angle resulted in the displacement of many blocks and cracking of the blocks that lined the chambers and passage ways. This interesting theory also says that the gentler angle was used to reduce the amount of weight that was supposed to be added above the chambers and the passageways of the pyramid. The Bent Pyramid boasts some of the most original casing of any pyramid in Egypt.

Although some parts of the casing are falling down, this pyramid offers the best image of the sparkling brilliance that the pyramids of Egypt featured before their casings were stripped away. The majority of these casings were removed and the limestone were used to build some other buildings in the country. Many experts believe that Sneferu was buried in this pyramid, but still his body has not been found in there. Many people believe that he was buried in the next pyramid which was erected to the north, and now it is called the Red Pyramid. The Bent Pyramid represents the only known pyramid from the Old Kingdom to have two separate entrances on two different faces. An entrance is made by the traditional north face, while the other one is on the west face of the structure. Nowadays the entrance is carefully protected by a metal locked door. Founded by Pharaoh Sneferu, the Bent Pyramid dates back from about 2600 BC. It was the first pyramid that was planned to be raised as a true pyramid, as opposed to a step pyramid.

The ancient nickname of the Bent Pyramid was either "The Southern Shining Pyramid" or "Sneferu is Shining in the South”. The Bent Pyramid received its nickname from it remarkable bent angle, which was changed to 43° halfway up. It was constructed with a different angle because the builders realized the initial angle was too steep and adjusted it to avoid collapse. The Bent Pyramid measures 599 ft square and its original height was of about 344 ft. Many explorers believe that this structure represented the first attempt to create a pyramid with smooth sides. Although the pyramid was only partially successful constructed, it was an important step in the pyramid development. Nowadays it represents also the only Egyptian pyramid that keeps a majority of its original limestone casing, offering the best image for the original appearance of all pyramids. King Sneferu of the Fourth Dynasty founded three amazing pyramids during his lifetime, and a fourth smaller step pyramid at Seila in the Faiyum. He has left behind his pyramid at Meidum, and he moved the royal court to Dashur, located just south of Saqqara. King Sneferu started a new project which represented the monument that would become famous in modern times as the Bent Pyramid. Sneferu was the father of Khufu, the founder of the Great Pyramid, who was married to Queen Hetepheres, whose treasured funerary equipment was found in a shaft at Giza. It was totally restored and displayed in the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo.

The interior of the pyramid is also unusual and wonderful. The northern entrance features a height of about 11.8 meters from the ground level. From that point the guests get to descend down a long thin shaft measuring about 80 meters. Then they will enter in a corbelled room. After this room, in order to reach the lower burial chamber that is 6.25 meters up the south wall, they have to climb a wooden ensemble of stairs. The western shaft is milder in slope than the northern one, leading down about 65 meters to another burial chamber, higher up in the body of the pyramid than that from the northern entrance. In this fantastic chamber can be admired the ancient cedar wood, used in this place to alleviate the stress on the chambers. When you get to enter the pyramid you can live an odd experience that there is something unique to the Bent Pyramid, some more things that had been noted by earlier explorers and scientists. Standing within the pyramid you can feel the cool air flowing from inside the pyramid to the exit, giving you a strange feeling of fear. The veritable structure has a great importance for the residents of the country and for the whole planet too. These huge structures reveal a mysterious feeling of adventure, reminding of the glorious past of the ancient eras.

The Bent Pyramid is a miraculous monument that stands like a real witness to all the secrets and histories of the world. It relates many exciting memories, intriguing facts and ancient treasures. The interior ambiance is absolutely unique and pleasant, surrounded by fabulous chambers that relate hidden secrets and important events. The tourists will get to admire the whole interior in tranquility, guided by special persons who will describe and inform about all the significant events that caused the foundation of the pyramid.
