Totterdown is a hilly district and it includes probably the steepest residential street in the world. Maybe not the world’s, but Vale Street is quite a darn steep. Almost all the houses on this street had been built at the end of the 19th century. A great example is the famous „Three Lamps’’, but later many houses and important businesses were devastated because of a planning decision that was taken in 1970. This section of the area offers an amazing overview of Totterdown for anyone new to the place and provides some useful contacts for established residents.
This steep street is only about 200 yards long and flanked by terraced houses in this highly populated part of Bristol. However, what makes this road to be really interesting is it steepness. Some people had measured it and realized that is steeper than 1:3, at around 35%. The tourists enjoy some unique experiences when visiting the street. And if you have driven up it in Front wheel drive cars than you can see how driven wheels skid even in the dry, if the car does not include a decent amount of power it simply won't make it up.
When driving down, you can see the Park Street at the bottom, and at right angles it is a bit stomach churning. This road is famous for being the steepest in Great Britain, offering exceptional adventures when driving or walking on it.
A great event, an important tradition preserved during the time is organized every year here. Easter wouldn't be Easter without the annual tradition of egg rolling on the steepest street in the city. The residents have been sending hard-boiled eggs down Vale Street in Totterdown on Easter Sunday for the last 14 years. This seems to be a very enchanting tradition that makes people feel good and have fun.
