Filbert Street

The steepest street in San Francisco, without curves, is Filbert Street, located two streets south of Lombard, also between Hyde and Leavenworth. The street features a 31 degree slope, definitely a challenge for walking and downright dangerous and perfect for roller skates.

Located pretty close to Lombard Street, it has the same steepness, except they forgot to  introduce all the bends. The result is that you almost have to recline your seats in order to drive down it. If you have admired the crooked part of the Lombard Street, you should definitely visit the steep block of Filbert street, located only two blocks south. Probably one of the most famous of San Francisco's stairways, the Filbert Steps deserve their consideration.  The stairs rise up in three amazing sectors  from Sansome Street to Coit Tower.
The lowest section of the stairway is concrete and steel snaking up the side of a cliff which makes visible  a wide concrete stairway.  After reaching Montgomery Street, the steps cross the median with a short staircase.

The upper section is more straight, running through a series of sculpted  and sophysticated gardens. The stairs are impressive for their length, opening  outstanding views of San Francisco, with the well tended gardens on either side, and the remarkable art deco buildings along the way.  One of the most wonderful structures features three-story high reliefs of the city.
Nearby the street  can be admired the amazing Greenwich Street Stairs as well.  We recommend taking one stairway up to Coit Tower, which is a lovely masterpiece, a must-visit landmark for the city.
Filbert Street is a notable street, which is famous for its steep incline and thus, at one point, its steps which people are crossing the street must pass. Filbert has its start point  in the Presidio and  has its end near Coit Tower on Kearny, where the marvelous steps are located. These steps take the town’s guests down to the Embarcadero from Telegraph Hill and are known as one of the areas where the wild parrots can be admired. The origin of the parrots is unknown, but their residence in the area is part of the local lore of San Francisco.  A visit to this street will offer lovely moments, surrounded by incredible landmarks and picturesque views that the steeps  open in front of your eyes.
