The International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary

The International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary is an annual film festival, which takes place in July in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The festival was attributed the category “A” since 1956.

Thanks to the “A” Category, the Film Festival in Karlovy Vary is a part of a group of prestigious festivals with the status of "non-specialized festival with a competition-length feature films", such as, for example, the International Film Festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Tokyo. The Festival in Karlovy Vary is one of the few festivals of the category that is opened to the public.

More than 200 new films from around the world are presented at the festival in the Czech Republic annually. Some movies are shown only at the festival and do not enter the distribution network after it. The International Film Festival is regularly visited by famous actors and directors, not only from the Czech Republic, for example, the actors Judy Love, Danny DeVito, Andy Garcia, Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Harvey Keitel and John Malkovich, the actress Sharon Stone, Renee Zellweger, Ornella Muti, Keira Knightley and the directors Milos Forman, Nikita Mikhalkov, Jiri Menzel, Vera Chytilova and many others. The greatest attention is paid to the main International competition of full-length feature films. Only the films made in the last season, that hadn’t participated in other film festivals of "A" category, are selected to participate at the festival. Besides the official competition, the competition of documentary films and the competition of the section "The East of the West", the traditional news sections and current thematic retrospectives had already been prepared for the spectators.

The history of the festival

The Festival History began in 1946 when the spa town Marianske Lazne hosted the first filmmakers’ festival of unusual format. Films from seven countries participated at the festival. There wasn’t any competition at the festival in 1946-1947. The Film festival had to prove that the nationalized film industry in the country is quite viable.

The International competition of films was first held in 1948.

The festival was held in Karlovy Vary since 1950. It was an annual event until 1952. The festival takes place every year since 1952.

The festival is already judged by an international jury since 1951.The Karlovy Vary competition found quickly its place among the developing festivals and received the “A” category in 1956.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Foundation was established in 1993. Its founders were the Ministry of Culture, the Karlovy Vary City Hall and the Grand Hotel "Pupp". The official opening and the closing ceremonies of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival were held at the Great Hall of the Hotel "Termal".

The festival is held annually, usually in July since 1994. More than 200 films are shown each year at the festival. Many of them are European and world premieres.

Watching a movie at the cinema with friends is the best way to relieve yourself from the daily stress, but for the lovers of films, a movie is not enough to create such pleasure that defies fun in itself.
For those who want a dramatic set-up or romantic and exotic tone movies, the film festivals are the ideal choice.
A weekend or two weeks of films accompanied by local party creates a relaxing holiday in the most exciting cities in the world that are a perfect destination in itself.
The Film festivals are as luxurious as the beautiful cities that emerge in the brightest stars at the film premieres and parties.
"The most exciting of such festivals is that you can watch videos continuously, from eight to two in the morning," said Jennifer Holt, assistant professor of media studies and film at the University of California, Santa Barbara, quoted by Forbes.
But that's not all: the crowd of fans who enjoy the experience make you quickly integrate with the non-stop movie madness.
"Each film has an impressive audience, even at midnight.
You are surrounded by people, on all sides who share the same passion: films.
It’s so interesting that they forget to eat or sleep," continued Holt.
What surprises the audience is that at the film festivals in Cannes, Berlin and Toronto are premieres.
Telluride Film Festival, a ski resort in the mountains of Colorado, has public movies that were not previously run in American cinemas.
I warmly welcome all lovers of film festivals and I want to say that the main goal of a festival is to increase interaction between various cultures and strengthen friendly relations between them involving its citizens to new works by talented, contemporary authors, performers and creative teams.
I hope this information will be one of the most important and it will let you know about many memorable events.
I wish you, dear friends, new creative discoveries, fruitful journeys, bright and joyful experience.
