About Kuopio

Kuopio is the largest city in the Eastern Finland and comprises a population of about 91,000 people. It lies in the Kallavesi Lake district. Kuopio was founded in 1652 and represented an important centre of commerce and management in the whole province, but today it is famous for acting as a winter tourism attraction of the country, living in an abundance of snow during the winter months.

The city lies on a long distance for the capital, Hensilki, at about 400 km away. The Orthodoxchurch Museum of Kuopio is one of the most imposant ecclesiastical museums in Western Europe. This majestic museum was established in 1957, with its buiding that was built in 1969, including a large display of different icons, liturgical textiles, sacred objects, that belong to the grand monasteries of Valaam and Konevets. Those exhibits are offered for the public admiration and are precious pearls for the museum, but some of them unfortunately were evacuated during the war.

The most amazing sight in all Finland, that lies in Kuopio is Mount Puijo, which includes a tremendous 75 metres tower, that opens a stunning panoramic view.
