About the Jeita Grotto

While in Beirut one definitely must see the Jeita Grotto. The caves are simply amazing creation of Mother Nature. They approach astounding wealth. Known since Paleolithic times, the action of water has created a cathedral, like vaults beneath the wooden hills of Mount Lebanon. The view of the caves is simply overwhelming, breathtaking and unique. This nature wonder lies only 20 km north from Beirut. The most incredible fact is that in the good old Paleolithic times this place was populated by humans. The Jeita Grotto is considered a Lebanese national symbol and a top tourist destination. Concerts are given here and anyone can enjoy an unforgettable escapade. The Jeita Grotto plays an important social, economic and cultural role being a finalist in the new 7 Wonders of Nature competition. It is the kind of place that reminds that God is the creator. During the Civil War II the cave was used by the Christian militias as a store of munitions. Jeita is the longest complex cave. It sits at 300 meters above the sea level and has a height difference of 305 meters. Both caves provide a tunnel or escape route for the underground river. There is an upper cave and a lower cave. The upper grotto is accessible by foot and one can touch and see rich limestone deposits and crystals reminiscent of wild petrified orchids and big mushrooms. The lower grotto is smaller and can be visited by boat due to the fact that it has a river flowing through it. The natural formations are just wonderful and the boats navigating easily together with the sound of rushing water give you a sensation of cold. The place offers a sense of spiritual serenity, that is matched by only a few places on the Earth.
