History

The Saint Constantine and Elena’s Cathedral in Beltsy, Moldova is one of the best places to visit while being in the city. It is one of the most monumental buildings of the XX th century. The cathedral began in September 24, 1924 by Visarion Puiu together with Patriarch Damianus of Jerusalem, Miron Cristea and Carol II of Romania. Its consecration took place on June 2, 1935. It was attended by king Carol II and the Metropolitan of Australia Timotheus.

Description

The cathedral represents a combination of traditional architecture in triconic plan and decorative elements of the neo-Byzantine style. The entrance to the cathedral is via an open veranda in two levels marked by semicircular arcades with columns which have knitted designs. The main edifice consists of a tambour or drum with a granduous semicircular dome. The lateral parts of the façade are marked by porticoes with columns. The altar’s apse is semicircular too. The building survived almost without visible effects the harsh treatment during the Soviet Era, when it was used as a depot and later as a Museum of History and Ethnography. Nowadays is one of the most attended places by religious people and lots of visitors.
