About Bălţi

Beltsy also called ’’the northern capital of Moldova’’ is the second largest city in terms of area and economic importance after Chisinau. Situated 127 kms north of the capital Chisinau and located on the river Raut, a tributary of the Dniestr, Beltsy was initially founded as a centre of commerce in 1421 by Ringalia de Mazovia, the Poland king’s sister Wladyslaw II Jagiellon of Lithuanian dynasty, who was Alexander the Great’s wife. The locality was so called because there were many pools of water and wetlands around the city. The locality burned totally after the Tatars’ invasion from Crimea ruled by Menli I Giray. Beltsy was slowly reconstructed and became a town during the second part of the XVIII th century .At that time the town was known as the biggest cattle commercial centre. Most of the buyers and commerciants were from Austria.
