  St. Patrick Cathedral is the largest church of Ireland, and one of the three largest cathedrals in Dublin, which was constructed in 1191. The cathedral seems to the National Cathedral in Ireland, with no bishop leading there, as it used to be in all Christ Churches Cathedral. This imposant building was built by the  Comyn Archbishop , and  it was entirely renovated between 1844 -1869, from the funds collected by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. The guests can see an impossant neo-ghotic cathedral, including some old parts of the structure.
 

Related history

 
The person to whom  the cathedral was dedicated, St.Patrick, thought to walk in Dublin during his trip to Ireland. In the memory of his visit  a wooden church was built , one of four Celtic Parish Curches, built in Dublin. Many scientists think that he was converted from paganism  to Christianity. The first Anglo Roman Archbishop of Dublin, John Comyn, in 1191,erected the ancient church of St.Patrick , to be transformed in a cathedral, made of stone. The present structure that housed the cathedral was constructed in the 13th century, keeping some original remains. From the first period of its existence, the region was confronted with many floods, caused by the branches of the river Poddle. This  happened in the 18th century. During the time, the cathedral suffered a lot of deformations. It was even predisposed to collapse. Jonathan Swift was the dean of the cathedral between 1713 till 1745. The wooden church was erected on the site where it is thought that St.Patrick had baptised converts, around 450 AD.

St.Patrick Cathedral is a magnificent structure steeped in the history of Ireland, that plays a significant role in the country’s cultural life. The imposant cathedral rises up with a height of about 91 meters, including its nave that reaches 17 metres high. In 1362 the west wing of the structure with the original tower, were totally destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt later, in 1370, by the Archbishop Minot. The architectural Victorian style that characterizes the Cathedral today, can be explained by those several renovations of the building, made in 1860-1865. This majestic cathedral housed the funeral services of the two presidents of Ireland, for Dr.Douglas Hyde and Erskine Hamilton Childers. The tours take about 30 minutes, but the self guided tours are also possible.  At the St.Patrick Cathedral the visitors can admire one of the largest structures in Ireland, which is very impressive and contains about 4.000 pipes. Some parts of this structures are very old, since 1695. During the time, the building suffered  a lot of renovations, but still continues to amaze the visitors with its charming sound.
