Sucevita Monastery

Situated at 18 km away from Radauti, Sucevita Monastery is a wooden masterpiece, between hills,   dating since 16th century. It was born from a legend that says that a very sinful woman brought stones during the time to build a monastery as a sign of her regret for all her sins. The monastery appeared in documents since 1582 when Petru Schiopu was a ruler in this region. This gorgeous and imposant monument is built in a Ghotic with Byzantine style, combined with elements from the old wooden monasteries. The huge walls that form the building were created after 1595 and have around 100 meters length, 3 meters width and more than 6 meters height, that create the image of a well preserved fortress, being supported by poles and big towers.

The monastery’s five towers appear each in a different scheme and the entrance is represented by a arched gate with heavy poles on each side that takes the visitors to the sacred place. On its first floor lies a small chapel named as “Buna Vestire”. The tower that host the monastery’s  bell is situated in the Northwestern side of the church. The next three towers have a octagonal form distinguishing one from the other, through a very unique style with paintings that relate important sacred scenes. The monastery is the ideal home for a gallery that shows a big collection of varnished wood, dating from 19th century. The church that is named “Biserica Invierii” feautures the modern tendencies combined with the classical architectural style used for all moldavian monasteries. The church provides with five big  rooms as the Altar ,the Nave, the Chamber for Tombs, the Narthex and the Exonarthex.

The interior is designed with paintings that relate moments from life of Jesus Christ, the life of Moise where appear animals, the life of Maria that is surrounded by flowers in a very pitoresque mountainous view. Sucevita Monastery includes a very famous museum that houses an important collection of the most precious and valuable works of medieval art, headgear graves of the ruler Ieremia Movila, and many other interesting embroideries.

For the visitors that want to discover or to admire the architectural style of 15th or 16th century, they can find exceptional religious elements, sculptures made in stone, medieval paintings or old manuscripts that describe the most valuable moments of the Romanian nation. This charming place will leave unforgettable memories in visitor’s mind, for its peaceful and excuisite ambiance.
