The Black Church is the most imposant and attractive monument built by German people when they lived on Transylvanian land. It has a very interesting and mysterious history, it was built between 1385 and 1477 on a place where first was a church destroyed by Mongols in 1242. The building of the church was seriously damaged during the Turkish raids in 1421, later in 1689 it suffered because of the Habsburg invazions who torched it and the walls were blackened from the fires. This 500 years old church is the most valuable sacred place between Viena and Istanbul, and the biggest Ghotic style church from Transylvania. This sacred place is the ideal home for the biggest organ from Europe, with a large collection of ancient carpets from Asia.
The construction of the Black Church started in 1380 and represents now a very long building of about 90 meters, the tower with the cross has over 65 meters height with a capacity of 5000 prayers. The tower hosts the biggest bell from the country that weighs over six tonnes. It was named Black Church because of the fire that blackened the walls, and took many years for restauration of the interior. But the exterior walls still keep the black colour, in the same time the interior surprise with an original font, mural painting of St.Maria dating since 1476, Ghotic sanctuary(1866), many golden sacred elements, tombstones of Brasov’s personalities. Behind the church exist two exhibitions that are open daily, relating all the interesant and important moments that features the church. In the middle of the courtyard is situated the statue of Johannes Honterus with 2,5 meters height, who have been a very famous humanist, who became a priest in this region, in 1542. This statue belongs to the church since august 1898 and a represent a bronze made significant statue.
This spectacular and amazing church impresses through its turbulent history and design. Surrounded by a charming and enigmatic air fascinates the visitors that come here especially during the summer time when the nature comes to life and makes the atmosphere even more majestic. The black walls keep the mysterious building in a deep and miraculous air intriguing the visitor’s eyes. Despite its old age the church became more dramatic and interesting, in a very well kept Ghotic style and old architecture, that can not be changed during the time. It will leave a great impression on you with unforgettable memories for the entire life.
