Queen Elizabeth Park

Queen Elizabeth Park is a national treasure for Vancouver, an unique landmark that attracts thousands of visitors. The park started its life as a basalt quarry and for many years was the main  source of foundation rock for Vancouver’s roads. In 1911 the quarry was closed and the area was like a huge dead landscape. Only the children were playing here on the hills, in the caves surrounded anyway by a beautiful nature with blackberries and brush, looking more as a wild territory. In 1949 there already started the project for planting trees and making this place a real fascinable park how it looks today with species of trees that will survive in the Canada’s climate. In 1956 in the park was constructed an modern roof which allowed to built on its top a 22 tennis courts. A very important donation of about 1 million dollars was offered for the park development for the construction of  a new plaza, fountains, walkways and the Bloedel Floral Conservatory.

The park covers 53 hectares and sits at a 150 meters altitude offering a great view over the city. There were designed some important gardens that fascinate with the exceptional species of flowers. As an example can serve the main quarry garden that presents a large number of perennial flowers that change the colour depending on the season. A very spectacular view gives the waterfalls that run among the flowers offering a very peaceful whisper of the water. The Bloedel Floral Conservatory is the ideal place where visitors can explore and delight their eyes with an amazing collection of tropical and exotic plants. Another beautiful thing in this park is the Arboretum, different species of trees were planted here, and still are planted exotic species of trees that make the park to look splendid, surrounded by colourful .

The most dramatic view I think it is the fountain that appered when the renotated plaza was opened. It includes 70 jets using over 80.000 litres of recirculated water, offering an exclusive vision to the park. The park seems to be the perfect destinations for celebrating the weddings, attracting the young pairs to celebrate the most important day in their life surrounded by the marvelous beauty of the nature that covers the park, with its splendid plaza and the gorgeous fountain that fascinate everybody. The park holds a very significant sculpture, Knife Edge, donated to the park by a art collector, Prentice Bloedel.

Queen Elizabeth Park has a very beautiful restaurant, a painter’s corner where the locals or the visitors can spend the time in a lovely ambiance. There also are open sports area for practicing sport activities as golf, tennis, or bowling in the Lawn Bowling Club, or just organizing in the park a picnic, or a birthday party. All the visitors are welcome in this calm and peaceful atmosphere for relax and just for some funny activities.
