Varadero
About 140 km east of Havana, in the western province of Matanzas, Varadero town is located, which is the largest tourist resort in the Caribbean. Varadero awaits visitors with a white sandy shore of 20 km, where you can practice almost all water sports: swimming, diving, sailing, windsurfing; numerous hotels with high-quality services, and many other opportunities to practice sports.
Varadero has been the tourist center for Cubans since 1872, but has become known worldwide since the 1930s, when an American millionaire, Irénée Dupont bought an estate here and built a huge enormous castle, golf course, airport and yacht marina. Soon other American millionaires had followed his example, and Varadero became millionaires’ nest. Even the head of Chicago mafia, Al Capone, came here to have fun.
The relaxing atmosphere is also kept by the coconut and hibiscus-lined boulevards, beautiful tropical flowers, called "jungle flame". The main attraction points are the impressive fortress Cardenas and the cave Cueva Bellamar, which stretches over two miles, impressing with its countless stalactites and stalagmites.
Other attractions in Varadero are: Craftsmen fair in Central Park, Church St. Elvira, Municipal Museum, Josone Park, Plaza America, Aquarium, Ambrosio cave, Varahicacos Ecological Park. The Municipal Museum of Varadero exhibits objects which recount the history of the city. You will find here personal items, documents, maps, testimonies about the historical monuments in Varadero. Besides the items shown here, traditional architecture attracts visitors because of the colors and materials used in its construction.
Late January and early February there takes place the carnival in Varadero, while in June and October there are organized golf competitions.
