San Marino is the third European country in the top of the smallest countries, surpassed only by Vatican and Monaco, at the same time claiming to be the world's oldest republic, founded by Saint Marinus in 301 AD. The country has a population of only 4493 inhabitants in an area of only 61 square kilometers, and its boundaries are found entirely within Italy.
Tourism industry is a very important income source for the country, representing about 50% of the GDP. As the oldest republic in the world and having a great history, tourists are increasingly attracted to San Marino.
If you come to San Marino, make sure to not miss visiting San Marino - the country's capital, La Rocca – also known as Guaita, the most ancient tower, Palazzo Publico, State Museum.
The best tourist period is from April to June when the weather is most pleasant. The period from July to August should be avoided because of high temperatures, as well as high prices.
