The Museum of Modern Art in New York

The Museum of Modern Art, also referred to as MoMA, is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, on 53rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Founded in 1929 as a settlement of culture and education, the Museum of Modern Art in New York is considered to be the most influential museum of modern art in the world. MoMA hosts the most beautiful art work collection in the world from the 19th century up to the present, including those belonging to van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse and Jackson Pollock. The collection displayed in the museum also includes works of architecture, design, drawings, painting, sculpture, prints, photography, illustrated books, film, and electronic media.

In 1929, Alfred H. Barr Jr., founding director of MoMA, clearly expressed the intention for the museum to be dedicated to support art lovers from New York and the entire American continent, in their efforts to understand and enjoy contemporary visual arts. In this way, without even suspecting the later success of this museum, Alfred H. Barr Jr. gave the city of New York the largest modern art museum in the world. After being closed for renovation for two and a half years, MoMA reopened in November 2004. Remodeled and expanded by the Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi, the museum of 58,529 square meters is nearly twice the size of the original building.

The art works of important artists can be admired by the public throughout the year such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne and Frida Kahlo. Namely, some of the most valuable works of art displayed here are: The Dance I by Henri Matisse, The City Raises by Umberto Boccioni, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, Broadway Boogie Woogie by Piet Mondrian, Painting (1946) by Francis Bacon, The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau, The Dream by Henri Rousseau, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Pablo Picasso, Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol, Water Lilies triptych by Claude Monet; The Bather by Paul Cézanne; Love Song by Giorgio De Chirico, Number 31, 1950 by Jackson Pollock, Broken Obelisk by Barnett Newman, Self-Portrait With Cropped Hair by Frida Kahlo, Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale by Max Ernst and others.

Other important art works of the collection include 3,000 pieces of architecture and design (from appliances to cars and helicopters), a collection of film and media, with more than 19,000 movies, and a photo collection, with works belonging to Man Ray, Walker Evans, Ansel Adams and Dorothea Langeo, among others.
