It is the second largest delta in Europe, and experts say remains the best preserved. Most of the Delta are in Tulcea County, and to the north of Ukraine belongs Chilia branch. Total area of the Danube delta is 4152 km square, of which Romania has 3446 km square.
This delta was formed 6,000 years ago in a bay of the Black Sea. From a geo-morphological, is a low alluvial plain, covered with marsh and water. A branch is made up of canals, lakes, reed, dunes and forests which communicate with each other. The largest lake is Dranov, with an area of 27.1 square kilometers. The climate here is continental-marine, delta is the most arid and sunny part of Romania. The climate is strongly influenced by winds from the Russian Plain, which produces frequent storms, especially in spring and autumn.
Delta circumscribe the ecosystem with more species of birds from Europe, meeting in summer here in 320 species, 166 of which nest in the Delta, and 159 are migratory. In winter, more than 1 million wild geese, swans, coot and rates halt. The entire ecosystem of the Danube delta was declared a Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO site since 1991, but nevertheless, destruction and pollution continue unhindered.
