It is one of the most famous symbols of Paris. Louvre is an art gallery and museum renown in all the world. A former royal palace, it was turned in 1793 as a museum. The interest in the Louvre increased with the mention in Dan Brown's novel, The Da Vinci Code. Built as a royal palace, the building is a masterpiece in itself, "guarded" by a huge equestrian statue of King Louis XIV.
Hosting over 35,000 works held in eight departments, including the permanent collections of the Louvre Leonardo da Vinci's creations, works of Jacques-Louis David and Alexandra Delacroix Antioch. Probably the most famous painting in the world, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is a oil painting created 16th century represented a woman who was awarded a mysterious expression. Mona Lisa was moved to the Louvre after the French revolution, and transported to a secret location in the Franco-Prussian war. In 1911, after it was returned, the Mona Lisa was stolen. In 1913 the painting was returned to the Louvre, and then Four out of five visitors to the museum come to the Louvre for the Mona Lisa only.
The Louvre is not only a museum, but a marvelous historical building and a part of the French cultural heritage.
