The giant opened mines of Rio Tinto create an incredible landscape. The extension included not only the surrounding mountains and valleys, but nearby houses, whose inhabitants were forced to move to specially built nearby cities. Named after the river that passes through the region, the region itself was named after the color red which is the Rio Tinto river. Red waters of the river are highly acidic and rich in heavy metals.
