The picturesque town of Colmar in France is considered one of the most beautiful European cities and seems to have been cut directly from a fairy tale illusion fueled by the appearance of cheerful and colorful houses.
Located in the Alsace wine region, Colmar is the third largest city in the region, situated on the plain between the Vosges mountains and river lauch. The city has many old wooden houses from the XVI, XVII and many artistic treasures, which gives the city an atmosphere of open-air museum. Colmar is the birthplace of the painter Martin Schongauer, and painter Matthias Groenewald, the late great master of Gothic, worked here.
Colmar was a port city, connected by a canal the Rhine River. Now is an industrial city that serves as the starting point to visit the Alsace region. The first mention of the city dates from 823, to name Columbarium, and in 1220 was surrounded by walls. The city soon became the most important commercial city in Alsace from the top and a center of art and scholarship.
