"Robert and Arlene Kogod" courtyard, with the elegant glass roof, designed by world renowned architect, Norman Foster, is situated in a historical building called the Patent Office, which houses the Art Museum and National Gallery of Portraits Smithson. Foster has worked with the Institute Smithson at the center of the gym building. The roof is not on the original structure of the building, which was built in several stages between 1836 and 1868.
