The Maldives is an island in the Indian Ocean located in the southern Indian subcontinent, south India and south-west of Sri Lanka. The country consists of 22 atolls and three islands isolated or 1 199 islands in total, stretching from north to south between the Lakshadweep and the British territory of the Indian Ocean. Many of these islands are islands away. The capital and largest city of the country is Male.
