Also called "Bird's Nest" because of its complex architecture, Beinjing National Stadium was designed during the 2008 Olympics. Completion was scheduled for March of 2008. Here took take place opening and closing ceremony of the Olympics, and most activities. It is located near the Beijing National Aquatics Centre.
In 2002, Chinese government officials have invited architects to the world in a competition for design. Pritzker Prize - winning architects Herzog & de Meuron collaborated with Chinese group for ArupSport and Architecture - Design and Research to win the competition. Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei was design consultant.
