   It is the 5th largest island of the 63 that make up Singapore and, today, a very popular tourist resort whose name means in Malay dialect: peace and quiet. By contrast, in the past called "Death Island" or "Island of Death Beyond." Why so called? No one knows exactly but most likely because of the pirates that swarmed around, the belief here was paradise confrom warriors who slew or in memory of the malaria epidemic in 1840 nearly exterminated by early settlers on the island.
