The Pyramid of Senusret

The pharaoh Senusret III, the ruller of the 12th dynasty founded a large pyramid complex, located just northeast of the Red Pyramid. Senusret's Pyramid featured a number of smaller pyramids and interesting tombs for his female relatives. The pyramid of Senusret rises up with a height of about seventy eight meters and includes a base of around one hundred and five meters square. The same as other pyramids of the Middle Kingdom the core of this amazing pyramid is mudbrick and when it was finished it was clad in limestone. The mudbrick blocks were unequal in size and shape and some still bear the fingerprints of their makers.

The entrance was created in the pavement of the courtyard, situated west of the pyramid. However the burial chamber was not located close to the vertical axes. Above the vaulted ceiling of the burial chamber were included two relieving chambers, the first one comprised ten limestone beams with a weight of about thirty tons, while the second was built from mudbrick. The burial chamber was beautifully lined with granite and plastered entirely with white gypsum. Anyway the rest of the area was clad in limestone of a very bad quality which was painted with red and black spots to appear like pink granite. A great granite sarcophagus carved to form the serekh motif was designed near the west wall of the burial chamber and a beautiful niche was placed in the south wall which supposed to hold the canopic chest of the pharaoh. The pyramid complex included a small mortuary temple, which was designed on the east side of the pyramid.

The temple is almost entirely ruined but many think that by this period the traditional mortuary cult had declined in its notable importance and the temple was changed to look more like a small offering hall with a false door, with small storage room, and interesting entrance chamber. The unique fragments of the wall decorations feature the name of Senusret III along with scenes that show a great number of the gods of Ancient Egypt, scenes of cattle being slaughtered and images of the pharaoh when accepted gifts. A fantastic large temple was founded in the south part of the pyramid making the connection with the enclosure wall. The temple included an open court with papyrus stem columns with a series of sanctuaries at the back of it. Images of the decorations within the temple depict the wonderful Heb Sed festival of Senusret III and also many Egyptian gods. To the north side of the main pyramid are found many tombs that are thought to belong to the burial sites of Senustres's daughters. Many scientists think that at least four of these miraculous tombs include a small pyramid built over them. A central shaft runs down to a vaulted chamber that connected four sets of chambers which would have included a sarcophagus and canopic jars. Under the chambers was created a long corridor which clinked eight large niches and each of them housed arcophagi, two of which were beautifully inscribed.

The lower gallery also comprised a huge amount of burial equipment and a large haul of treasured jewellery a large number of which belonged to Sit-Hathor, who seemed to be the sister or maybe the wife of Senusret III. There were also seen many fantastic pieces belonging to Mereret, who had in her possessions several stunning pieces of gold jewellery, such as gold pectorals studded with precious stones and gold bracelets. There are three small pyramids by the south wall of the Senusret’s Pyramid and many explorers believe that they represent the burial sites of royal women.
