The Atlantic Road is a significant part of Norwegian national road 64. The road is situated in the proximity of the cities Molde and Kristiansund in the midwest part of the Norwegian coastline. This wonderful and spectacular road is a very popular tourist attraction. Welcome to visit the Atlantic Road where you can drive on the coastal edge of Norway!
The construction of the road started in August 1983 and it took till the 1989 to be completed. The tourist will find this amazing road in the south of Kristiansund, but as a passenger on the Hurtigruten he can usually have the posibility to take a bus tour to experience the road. This road is fantastic, both in sunny weather as well as in real stormy days. It is 8,3 km long, constructed on many small islands, comprising 8 bridges and numerous landfillls.
It provides an open-sea-view, making the road become a spectacular and popular touristic attraction of the region. In 2005 the Atlantic Road was voted by the Norwegian Construction of the Century, representing the second most visited scenic road after the well-known Trollstigen. When driving to its north side, the landscape is changing to a more coastal environment, to a more exclusive atmosphere. The trees that beautify the area are getting fewer and smaller, creating a unique and marvelous scenery. The tourists find this very beautiful, and during the summer months this is just a small paradise.
The Atlantic Road is very appreciated and popular among tourists, and thousands of tourists visit it annually. They can also admire how perfectly the road and the bridges fit into the landscape in a very attractive way. The heavy traffic is not allowed in the area, and even if it is restricted it is very popular to stand fishing on the splendid bridges. There is a lot of fish to catch under these bridges, so close to the ocean. There come hundreds of seagulls and they catch fish swimming in the stream under the bridge. The road is twisting around and between those tiny islands, providing a superb view of the ocean in the right side.
The Atlantic Road definitely represents a scenic masterpiece set amongst the hills, lakes and rivers of Norway’s fine natural landscape. There are included many lay-bys at which to park and wonder of the excellent surroundings, just several feet from the smooth coastal rocks. Also the great panorama is a splendour of wildlife such as seals and whales, and the not so good weather conditions can often offer water shows crashing against the rocks as you drive. This is a truly magnificent scenery, which enchants and overwhelms the tourists. Live the best experience of your life and enjoy lovely moments visiting the Atlantic Road.
