Milford Road is a significant part of the New Zealand State Highway 94, that climbs up to almost 1,000 metres above the sea level. Milford Road covers over 119 kilometres and starts from Te Anau to Milford Sound. It takes two hours to drive this wonderful road, with no stops.

The Milford Road is absolutely scenic and well-maintained. First it runs north along Lake Te Anau, offering plenty of sights to stop at and to relax for a while. Then the road continues up to the Eglinton River valley, between the Earl Mountains to the west and the Livingstone Mountains on the east. A great lookout point is the "Mirror Lakes", where the tourists can get a reasonable reflection of the mountains and rest in a fresh and harmonious ambiance. There are ducks there, but also hordes of sandflies.

The Milford Road provides easy access to the well-known Milford Sound, the only of the Fiordland sounds accessible by road. Mildford Sound is also the only one that can be visited without either paying for an expensive boat trip. The section of the Milford Road that is included in the World Heritage Highway represents a unique journey into the very heart of Fiordland National Park, a significant part of the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Mostly of the striking and significant features of the World Heritage Area are revealed along its route, creating a wonderful paradise with splendid places.

While some of the tourists will be satisfied to admire the scenery through the windows of a car or a bus, some of them will be rewarded by stopping to discover the short walks or viewing sites along the way. They will be truly surprised by the beauty of the area, which is a rarity in the world.

The marvelous road was completed in 1952 while the Homer Tunnel which cuts through the Homer Saddle in the Southern Alps started in 1935. The tunnel has a length of about 1270 meters and goes down from the 945 meters sea level at a gradient of about 1:10. The road is opened all the year-round, but because it is a high alpine route, and there is a risk of avalanche the road is partialy or completely closed sometimes, in the winter time. Even if it is opened, during the winter time, the cars will be required to carry chains. This is for the tourists safety and also for a better acces on the road. The tourists will get to see a splendid landscape and the road will take them to a small and delightful paradise, set amongst treasured masterpieces.
