The Sichuan – Tibet Highway
The Sichuan – Tibet Highway is 2412 km length. It begins from Chengdu, the Sichuan Province in the east and ends at Lhasa in Tibet in the West. The road spreads into Lhasa near Yaan, Garze and Qamdo. The Sichuan-Tibet highway crosses the 14 highest mountains, with the length of 4000-5000m. It includes dozens of well-known rivers, and crosses primeval forests and numerous dangerous sections. This is a breathtaking view on the line, with a unique ethnic customs.
The highway is located in the mountains, which is very high. The roads are narrow. It is often cloudy and very dangerous.
Over the past 20 years (from 1985 to 2005), in China the number of deaths on the road accidents has almost doubled (from 3.9 to 7.6 per 100,000 population). During this time, the number of cars on the road, as well as other vehicles, mostly motorcycles increased. According to the Xinhua news agency there were almost 82.000 accidents with fatal outcome, in 2006 on the road. In other words, for every 10 000 vehicles there were 5.1 victims. The irony is that the highest rates of the road deaths were recorded in the least densely populated regions. The mountainous road from Sichuan to Tibet, especially in the segment of Chengdu-Tibet where the landslides and the rock avalanches are a common phenomenon, is one of the most problematic in this sense.
