The International film festival in one of the largest cities in The Netherlands - Rotterdam is one of the most prestigious European festivals. It is held annually in the last week of January. The films are shown in various cinemas across the city during the festival.
The history of the festival
The Festival was held for the first time in 1975. It was founded by Hubert Bales, who led the organization and conducted the ceremonies until his death in 1988. A special fund named after the creator of the most famous festival in the Netherlands was set up. The fund was designed to support financially the cinemas in developing countries. The initial aim of the festival is the original films and the alternative cinema debut supporting. The festival is not commercial. It emphasizes the East Asia and other developing countries studios films. The emblem of the Rotterdam festival is a tiger. The main prizes are three Asian tigers - gold, silver and bronze, each of them costs 15 thousand euro. The project «CineMart», created in order to sell scripts and ready-made films is held annually during the film festival.

The festival program consisted of 14 movies, eight of them being the world premiere. For the first time the competition involved movies from Turkey, New Zealand and Indonesia. The competitive program consisted of 27 short, less than 60 minutes, films. Among the world premieres were the debut film of the Quebec directors Bernado Henry and Miriam Verreaux "To the West from Pluto" , the second movie of the Chilean director Alicia Sherson "The Tourists" and the New Zealand film "The Power of the Water".
The main competition jury included the artist Marlene Dumas, the Turkish writer and director Yesim Ustaoglu, the director of the South Korean Academy of Arts and one of the directors of the Seoul Digital Cinema Festival Park Ki-Yong, the Hungarian writer, director and actor Cornel Mundruzho and one of the screenings program directors of the Lincoln Center Cinema Association in New York, Kent Jones.
The movies "The Edge of the earth", by Sergio Caballero, "Musanskie diaries" by the south Korean director Park Chan-Boom and "Eternity" by Thai director Sivarodzha Kongsakula got the main award "The Golden Tiger".
The special anniversary prize “The tiger return”, rewarding only this year, shared the Dutch-Chinese film "The Club Zeus" by David Verbeeka and the movie "The eyes ," directed by Hong Sang Suu from South Korea.
The International Film Festival in Rotterdam, as Locarno, Berlin, Venice, and Cannes festivals, is one of the biggest film festivals in Europe.
