Today the Eagle and the Child is a typical English pub where you can serve decent beer. For 23 years, from 1939 to 1962, meetings of the literary circle took place here. It was organized every Tuesday from 11.30am until one o’clock. The members of the literary circle were John Ronald Reuel Tolkien the Professor of English Language and Literature and the author of the book “Lord of the Rings”, his close friend C.S. Lewis the teacher of Magdalen , the College and author of the famous “Chronicles of Narnia”, Charles Williams and Owen Barfild. At these meetings someone read an excerpt from their woks. With the time such meetings became a significant phenomenon in the cultural life of Oxford.
In memory of these events pictures and a small plaque with interesting information hangs on the walls. The corner of the table is adored with photographs of different writers.
