Girdwood is situated in the Southcentral part of Alaska with a permanent population of about 2,000 of friendly people. It lies in a small valley in the Chugach Mountains. History of Girdwood
The city of Girdwood was initially founded as a gold mining town, at the turn of the century. It was named in the honor of the Irish immigrant and linen merchant James Girdwood, who had four claims of gold in the Crow Creek. The real development of Girdwood was stimulated due to the construction of the railroad, that begun in 1915. in 1954, 11 locals inaugurated the Alaska Ski Corporation, that supposed to make the dream of a first class ski resort to become reality. In 1960 was built the first chairlift and the first lodge. Due to the powerful earthquake from 1964, which distroyed the coastal edges along turnagain Arm, was created the situation to move Girdwood 2.5 miles further up the valley, in the location that stands today.
