The fourth largest lake in Iceland, Myvatn,is an interesting and strong attraction for the country, from earliest times. Lake Myvatn has been the greatest spot, that tourist wanted to observe, admire and explore. It is a very beautiful and large lake, occupying an area of about 37 square kilometres rising with a shore spreaded by numerous small creeks, beautified by a group of about 50 islands. Lake Myvatn is a very shallow lake offering the opportunity for sunlight to reach all its bottom, due to the fact the Myvatn is located in the most sunny region of Iceland that gives the opportunity for a rich nutrition to the lake, having the most fertile water for a lake. All the tourists watch this majestic lake with enthusiasm, which is very famous for its variety of birdlife, as the area that surrounds the lake is the perfect house for ducks and wetland birds. During the summer time the lake region is housed by a huge number of ducks, than anywhere on the Earth.
Lake Myvatn is a region protected and preserved by law, it is one of the places included in a register with international marshlands, which have a significant role for the society. Swarms of midges, from the Chironomidae species, have their home on this environment, and are small creatures which are related with the name of the lake. The imposant region that lies the lake on, was created and sculpted by volcanoes and craters, which managed the formation of these majestic landscapes. Many of this landscapes are wonderful attractions, charming the guest, for example the volcanic craters at Krafla, Hverfjall, Ludentsborgir and Prengslaborgir. On the lake shore, at Skutustadir, lies a pseudo crater, that became a national monument. On the north slope of the volcano Krafka is situated the Viti explosion crater, which reaches a diameter of about 300 metres. The geothermal water of the region that marks the volcano, supposed to be used for geothermal steam plants, that would be built at Krafla, Bjarnarflag area with high temperature water.
The district of Myvatn is populated by farms, and can take advantage from all the services of Reykjalhid village. The village provides the guests with qualified facilities for accomodation, since the tourism is a very important industry in this region.
