Neamt Monastery



  

   Neamt Monastery is a beautiful othodox complex for monks situated in the village with the same name, representing the oldest monachal place from Moldova. On documents it appears since 1407 but the monachal activity seems to belong to 12th century. The founder of the monastery is Petru I Musat, who had built the first church made from stone, that doesn’t exist today, but on this area existed a wooden church called White Church. The church that nowadays delight our eyes was founded by Stefan the Great at the end of the 15th century. The monastery includes two churches, two chapels, the bell tower that includes 11 bells and a museum with a big collection of cultural arts.

 
  Alexandru cel Bun did a great job for the monastery and restored it including some more exclusive buildings like cells, defense towers that now beautify the monastery. During the years the monastery suffered a lot of changes and after the earthquake from 1471 and the invasions of Mohamed the II, Stefan the Great decided that is nothing to do for the monastery, was totally destroyed, so he started to build a new sacred place in 1480. The new church for the Neamt Monastery was inaugurated in 1497. The monastery houses the icon of The Virgin Maria, painted in Israel in 665 year and is considerate a icon that realize miracles.
 
  This monachal complex has the biggest and oldest Romanian Library that includes an impressionant collection of about 18,000 volumes of books that represent a great treasure for Romanian Nation. This library had a significant role in the development of medieval art and culture of Romania. Altoughit had a very struggle history and suffered from the fires and theft the Neamt Monastery never gave up to appear as the most important representative center of the Romanian culture.
 
  The monastery rises as a valuable pearl surrounded by a beautiful nature, by secular forests, that create an unbelievable place just perfect for spending a great time, away from the crowd of the city of Neamt. Neamt Monastery highlights the maturation of the Moldavian architectural style, congealed on Stefan the Great time, and appears with richness and delicate colors that produce warm effects. The façade of the building are decorated with ornaments featuring the founders of those times, colored in green, yellow and brown, including Ghotic windows. This charming place still preserves the style of the old times and fascinates through its design and peaceful atmosphere. Inside the spirit of pure faith is everywhere and releases easily the prayers souls from the troubles and problems. The warm and silent ambiance attracts the prayers every Sunday morning.
