Logan Circle

Logan Circle is a great plaza situated on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway , originaly known as Northwest Square. Logan Circle was one of the five squares planed by William Penn for the city of Philadelphia. This place was known for being a public space for executuions, in 1823 there was hanged the last person, and in 1825 this place was named Logan Square, in the honor of James Logan, who was a famous statesman in the city of Philadelphia.

The name of Logan Circle comes from the traffic circle that was created in the square, designed by Jacques Greber , who had inspired from the Place de la Concorde in Paris. He created a huge monument in the centre of the circle, but later it was created a big fountain in the honor of the president of the Philadelphia Fountain Society, Dr.Wilson Swann. The Swann Fountain was designed by Wilson Eyre Jr. The central jet of the fountain has 50 ft high and has three  exceptional figures, representing the Philadelphia’s waterways.

Logan Circle is surrounded by significant institutions as Franklin Institute, The Free Library Of Philadelphia, The Academy of Natural Science, Moore College of Art and the Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica of Sts Peter and Paul. To get to the Swann Fountain it is very hard because is surrounded by five lanes of traffic that make the connection to the square very difficult. But for those who have patience the circle would be a pleasure to pass  and the fountain would be a gorgeous masterpiece that makes this place unforgettable. It is the most attractive destination for the Logan Square, which offer a dramatic view.

Although the Logan Square was a burial ground and had a bad, reputation during the time, the civic spirit transformed this area in a very peasant and welcomed place for relax and  for having a great time, surrounded by the beauty of the Logan Circle. Surrounded by those speedy lanes of traffic you feel yourself away from this bysy world, in a quite urban oasis just a few meters from the vehicles. But still this place attracts visitor’s eyes through its unique and magnificent style and design. Philadelphia started to convert this macabre area that was, into a wonderful residential area full of peaceful gardens  and green trees that transformed the square into a very lovely place for enjoying the time.
