Lithuania is one of the three so-called Baltic states; it is located in Eastern Europe, with access to the Baltic Sea, between Russia and Latvia. Lithuania is the southernmost and the largest of the three Baltic states. However, this country is different from Latvia and Estonia, and not just for the fact that it is closer to Central Europe. Lithuania resisted the Teutonic Order and started much later to convert to Christianity.
And the russification process had a much lower intensity here; also, there were very few ethnic tensions since they proclaimed their independence. Vilnius is the capital of the country and largest city here.
Tourism in Lithuania is continuously growing. The number of tourists in 2005 has increased by 11.1%, the number of tourists in 2006 being of 985,700. Druskininkai and Birštonas have registered an increase of 50% in 2005, compared to 2004.
The best places to see here are: Curonian Spit, Vilinius – the capital of Lithuania, Hills of Crosses - the most awesome and terrifying landscape of Lithuania: two hills covered by thousands of legendary crosses; the National Museum, Palanga - "capital "of the Baltic Sea coast, Druskininkai - a “spa" city with the largest water park in Eastern Europe. Summer and spring (May-September) are the best times to travel in Lithuania.
