Zentralfriedhof (German for "Central Cemetery") is the largest and most famous cemetery in Vienna. It was built in 1863, due to the fact that by that time, the city's population has increased largely and communal cemeteries were no longer sufficient. Later, Zentralfriedhof cemetery became the burial place for the writers and composers of that time.
With a size of 2.4 square kilometers, Zentralfriedhof is the second largest cemetery in Europe, after the one in Hamburg. It has 3.3 million graves, which places it first in Europe. The most fascinating and most visited part of the cemetery is called Ehrengraber, where there can be found the graves of great musicians and composers like Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Strauss. In the middle of Zentralfriedhof there is a church. Cemetery Zentralfriedhof became one of the most sought-after attractions in Vienna.
