Milan's beauty is already legendary, but there is another tourist attraction in its area that adventurous tourists should not miss: Certosa di Pavia. Certosa is a 14th century monastery. The gothic architecture of the monastery is extraordinary, both on the outside and inside, but what will attract your attention is the sacristy built in 1409. All cathedrals have sacristy where sacred vessels used at Holy Communion and other valuables are kept, but what makes it special for this one is that it is built entirely from hippopotamus teeth, a very unusual building material. The monks have made a vow of silence, so you will not find out many things from them and only a few are allowed to interact with tourists but only for the strictly necessary things.

Nine kilometers to the north of Milano, Certosa di Pavia was founded in 1396 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti as a family mausoleum. The church was completed in 1473, however, its marble facade was completed in the sixteenth century. The architectural complex of the Certosa is a work of great importance because it demonstrates the evolution of Lombard art from the late Gothic to Renaissance and Mannerism. Inside, there should be mentioned works by Perugino, Bergognone, statues tomb of Beatrice d'Este and Ludovico il Moro, by Cristoforo Solari (1497).
