Valentine's Day

Starting February 14, Christians in Europe and North America, and not only them, celebrate Valentine's Day. Although its origin is Catholic, Valentine’s Day becomes increasingly popular in other religions and cultures. Well, a celebration of love is always welcome, even if it is not native or it is not a tradition for centuries in certain regions.

Celebrating Valentine's Day has its origins in a tradition that began many years ago in ancient Rome. It is known about a Roman festival, Lupercalia, celebrated on February 14. This ancient festival celebrating fertility was held in honor of two Roman gods, Juno and Pan. One of the traditions was that of writing messages of love by the young unmarried people. These messages had to be placed in an urn, and all the young men chose one from there. According to the tradition, they had to charm the young woman whose message they chose.

Valentine's Day was called “The Day of The Birds’ Wedding” long ago. It was believed that birds choose their mate and begin to reproduce on the 14th February, the second week of the second month of the year.

Others tell how the Emperor Claudius II did not manage to gather the army because the men refused to enroll. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their wives. Because of this, the king banned weddings and engagements in Rome. A Christian priest named Valentine secretly married couples. When Emperor Claudius found out of this, he imprisoned the priest, who died in prison in the year 270 AD, on the 14th of February.

During the Roman Empire, when Christians first began to spread the new faith in Rome on 14 February, young Christian priest Valentine is executed for his faith in God. There are different stories about the existence of Valentine -as a preacher who encourage his friends in prison, and also as a priest to officiate marriages in secret among young Christians.

However, on February 15, the Roman Empire celebrated the Lupercalia, a celebration of love (not necessarily the pure and innocent one). Once established, the Catholic Church has designated as the feast of Saint Valentine on February 14, be considered celebration of love and lovers. Thus began a tradition of centuries, during which there were gathered superstitions, customs, traditions and behaviors that manifest on this day.

Although habits have changed in the meantime, St. Valentine’s Day became increasingly popular due to cultural influences from Western Europe and North America, although many countries do not celebrate this day, yet knows what this means.
