Shetland hosts each year, in midwinter, Fire Festival, a tribute to the Vikings. During the event there is a procession with the participation of 1,000 men and women dressed warriors. Finally, a replica of a Viking ship is burned on the water....

Even though I agree that we need to preserve our traditions, we also need to be able to make choices among the multiple traits and habits that we inherit. An eloquent example can be El Colacho; also, I would add UFO festival and the Cheese running one to the list, the former being quite ridicululous to my mind and the latter dangerous. Why don't we choose the best among good options? ;)

The truth is somewehere in the middle. Some of these festivals may seem ridiculous first place, but they represent the people and their nation and carry on the individuality. So, I think participating is totally ok, respecting some limitations. ;)
